if your contract starts Aug 13th you have to wait until that day to connect. If you have a router I would recommend that you do a factory reset before connecting in the evening of Aug 13th. Then the setup should be fully automatic.

Factory reset is detailed in the user manual:

1. Router has to be powered up and running.

2. Press the reset button for 5 seconds with a thin pen.

3. Wait for 3 minutes and then disconnect the router from the power.

4. Connect router to power again, the router starts within 3 minutes.

 

I would recommend not to connect any other cables before 1. And then connect the DSL cable before 4.

@costello: On August 13, the Internet connection and telephony will be set up automatically.

You can access the UI of the Smart 4 via

 

http://speedport.ip

 

You can then select English as the language. The device password, Wi-Fi name and key can be found on the type plate at the base of the Smart 4.

If the Smart 4 was used by the previous tenant, you should perform a factory reset before setting it up.
