Telekom Hybrid 5G Receiver SE - carrier aggregation

vor 4 Monaten

Hey, can someone help me what is the Telekom Hybrid 5G Receiver SE carrier aggregation capabilities? It has a built in RG520N-EU which capable to do multiple CA but I can manage to connect only 2 band it doesn’t Matter which direction I try.

The normal DSL speed is around 1-1.5MB/s which is enough to handle the 4 SIP line but I would not call it as internet in 2024. As I’m in a small village there is no n78 available at all so connecting 10Mhz 5G band and a 10-20 MHz 4G band give us speed usually 20Mbps but  in the evening can go down to 2-3Mbps  or on rare occasion up to 60Mbps but for any live stream (example video call) almost always useless.

As this hybrid SIM card can’t be used in a different device, I bought a prepaid SIM card and put it to a proper device with a directional antenna and RM520N-GL modem which is based on the same x62 modem as the RG520N-EU so the performance and aggregation should be similar. With that device I can connect instantly to 4 different band for an aggregated 60MHz and I can get easily 150Mbps and the fastest was 224Mbps

So, what’s going on?  Telekom crippled the 5G Receiver or I’m in the twilight zone? I don’t even understand why to push 5G on a 10Mhz band and the advantage from a 4G is between zero to nothing other than the mobile phones show the 5G logo but looks the backend still the same everywhere so make no sense to me.

    Hello @Peter_in_DE,

I searched in our database for an answer to your question, but it's not mentioned what the carrier aggregation capabilities of the device are.

So I'll have to ask our colleagues in the backoffice.

I'm coming back to you here as soon as I have an answer.

    Best regards Inga Kristina

    Hi @Inga Kristina J.

Thank you for checking it. I played with the Telekom SIM in my own device and I see the all the bands  only with the following APN 's "hybrid.telekom" or "hybrid.telekom" but none of them gave me IP address and checking with all known Telekom APN 's not even let me on the network. Is there any APN " href="https://telekomhilft.telekom.de/t5/Glossar/ APN /ta-p/4400139#glossar" target="_blank"> APN which can be used with the Hybrid SIM card with my own device if the 5G /ta-p/4398077#glossar" target="_blank"> 5G  Receiver is limited to use only 2 band? As the the DSL line speed in only enough for the phone lines I'm not really interested in aggregated speed between DSL network and the mobile network.

    Thanks,

    Peter

    Hello @Peter_in_DE,

I got an answer: The 5G Receiver is able to use 4-fold carrier aggregation.

So that should be no problem.

It's only possible to use the DSL/ LTE Hybrid tariff with the Telekom devices that are made for it.

    Kind regards Inga Kristina

    Hi @Inga Kristina J.

Thanks for coming back to me. Can you help me where should I see the extra aggregation? As the nerby towers has B3(1), B3(2), B8, B20, n1, N28 so it should able to pickup the exta bands at least from one direction. But it's not visible on that page only 2CA and the performance feels like a 2CA and checking other Telekom SIM in other devices even a phone can do more CA. At this point I can only say If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck.

    Regards,

    Peter

    Hi @Peter_in_DE,

it might be visible in the logfiles (settings - system-information).

But I must admit that I don't know this for sure. It's not possible for me to test it.

    Kind regards Inga Kristina

    Hi @Inga Kristina J.

Could you check this with the back office? I spent some time before I posted my question and I wasn't able to see even when I connected to the extension directly, but that's not giving out much informtion too only some infrom about the modem itself. And I still beleive the Telekom modification not allowing to connect more band. Please note I'm well aware of the modem real capabilities and the "extension" is actually modified Nokia CPE.  Also I can't see it in the log as well and I rellay want to use the full capabilities of the device.

    Regards,
    Peter

    Hey there @Peter_in_DE,

I'll get in touch with @Inga Kristina J. about posting your recent remarks towards the back-office.
Could you tell us, what happens when you unplug the DSL cable and just use the 5G connection?
In addition to that, please provide us with your customer detail in your Telekom-hilft account (customer ID and mobile phone number), so we can discuss this subject on the phone and can check, which tower is providing you with the 5G connection! Fröhlich

    Kind regards

    Hi @Christian Ha.

Thank you! When I disconnect the DSL line the cellular still working and showing connected 1 x 4G and 1 x 5G band. The contract is not under my name I just try to help out for the family to get a stable intrnet connection. I know where are the towers and what band they have and the signal strength for this house  from all provider as I'm looking for alternatives as well. So I done testing for those as well in peak and off-peak times as wel. I'm I right when I say on the hybrid setup the cellular data is not speed limited right?Telekom looks okay with a proper equipment but if this " 5G Extension" not able to aggregate more band this rubbish Hybrid needs to go and only unlimited sim needed and will sort out the rest. But I'm surprised how complicated to get verification about this 5G device with a Telekom firmware support multiple carrier aggregation as this is basically the most important thing if we talk about the maximum reachable speed if not counting the 90MHz n78 band what Telekom has but that is only availalbel in citites and wide enough alone for proper speed.

    Regards,
    Peter

    Hello @Peter_in_DE,

it is as I told you: The 5G receiver is able to use 4-fold carrier aggregation. No reason to doubt it.

It might be that this is not shown in the menu. The menu is quite easy, as it's made for average users.

I guess your point is the speed. Yes, there are some tariffs where the mobile speed is limited. That's why my colleague @Christian Ha. asked for the customer number. Then we could have a look at the tariff.

Both antenna look to the same direction and there is 2 minutes difference between the spedtest but I testing 5-6Mbps speed in the last 1-2 hour also I agree I using a better device than the " 5G extension"

I understand you says it support 4 CA actually it should 5 CA on LTE only mode for some specific bands, but everything what I see is proving the oposite

I had a chance to work on this again so the outcome was to open up the device and put it into a Poynting EPNT-2 and use the proper directional antenna as the original built in antenna is a bad joke as they are tiny omni directional antennas it's only good in urban areas as useless in rural area. With this setup it has acceptable speed but not as good as the Mikrotik ATL where can do cell tower and band locking properly. Interesting to see there is a single wifi antenna which I was able to turn on but as only 1 antenna  not much use for it but not sure why there is a GPS antenna as well and a running location service on the device... Once the contract end this will be bind and going to different provider what Telekom doing is too nasty an they gave middle finger for the users with their setup...
