Clarification regarding device rental contract termination and compensation

Dear Telekom Customer Service,
I am writing in reference to a compensation fee for early termination of rental contract
Last week, I received a letter along with a return label for my rented router, which I had not requested. I contacted customer service on the following day to clarify whether I would be charged compensation if I returned the device using the provided return label, as I am aware that my rental device contract has not yet reached its minimum contract terms.
During the conversation, I informed the customer service agent that I intended to return the router since I had already purchased another one from Telekom. However, I explicitly mentioned that if there was any compensation charge, I would prefer to keep the router until the contract naturally concluded. The customer service agent assured me that I would not be charged any compensation, as my current Internet contract is set to terminate at the end of this week.
Despite this assurance, today I received an email indicating that I would be charged a compensation fee for returning the router before the contract term.
Could you please clarify this situation? Thank you!
