Speedport Pro Plus Network storage
vor 23 Stunden
Hello all :
I'm trying to create a network storage by plugging in the WD 'my passport' external hard disk into one of the USB ports of the Speed Pro Plus router. But i can't see them anywhere.
In the router web page (http:// speedport.ip), under 'connected devices' i see this device listed under 'usb devices'.
I have enabled the SMB 1.0 in windows.
In the network file explorer in my laptop, i see speed port pro under 'network infrastructure' and speed port pro plus under 'other devices'. But when i double click on them, it takes me to the web page for login into the router.
I browsed through some old posts in this community, most of them were related to issues at an advanced stage where users could already see the files in the network.
I have not done this kind of setup before. The hard disk is a compact one and i usually connect it to the laptop and read/write contents directly. It just has a USB cable coming out if it. No external power or LAN slots. I assumed this to be a plug and play kind of set-up. Am I missing a step, or is this question of compatibility ?
Please could you guide me to achieve this ?
Thank you,
Vivek

Hi @VivekR
the feature needs to be activated and configured in the router's web ui. Please see the chapter starting at page 182 in the Speedport Pro Plus user manual.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. No, it didn't help, sorry. In the network storage page of the router's web UI, it doesn't show the external hard disk at all. I'm attaching a pic of what I see in the UI page.
Only in the connected devices section, it's shown as an USB device.
Also thanks for sharing that user manual. Never seen that before. was not in the box too.

Hi,
the file system (as per properties) is NTFS and it’s a 2 TB hard disk.

Hi,
In the meantime, i contacted Western Digital customer service and here's what they had to say :
Compatibility Limitations:
*WD My Passport Ultra is primarily designed as a USB-connected external drive, not a network-attached storage (NAS) device.
*Many routers, including models from Netgear and Telekom, may not fully support external hard drives like the My Passport Ultra for network sharing, especially if:
*The drive uses NTFS formatting, which some routers can't read.
*The drive draws more power than the router's USB port can supply.
*The router's firmware doesn't support large-capacity drives or specific WD models.
It looks like a compatibility issue on WD side, instead of a technical step on Telekom's side. But can someone please confirm if the Speed Pro Plus router indeed supports NTFS formatting? Also, is there another router with inbuilt NAS which can read and handle such external hard drives ?
thanks,
Vivek

I can't find any hint regarding file system support in the router documentation at all. However, the Speedport Pro makes use of open source software, thus Telekom is required to publish an open source license acknowledgement document. In the document, they mention a package called "ntfs-3g-2012.1.15-4- fuseint", which is an NTFS driver for Linux operating systems.
Of course, that's no guarantee they acutally use the driver to support NTFS formatted external drivers, but at least there is a chance.
The next thing I would try is to to connect the drive (btw, is it a pyhsical drive with rotating platters or is it an SSD?) via a USB hub with active a power supply. This reliefs the router from providing power for the drive and should eliminate any potential issues regarding current capacity at the USB port.
