What setup do I need to buy ?

Hello everyone,

I'm sorry I'm a foreigner who just moved into Berlin and my German is not good enough to write in said language, that's why I'm writing in English right now. I just moved into my flat, it's a newly built condominium, and I can't figure out what to buy. All I have is what you can see on the picture.

My tenant told me I need to buy a router, but most of them don't seem to have a plug that would fit my cable, so I'm kind of lost. I also have a RJ15 plug in the wall but I'm unsure if it is active or not.

Thanks for your help!

What is seen in the picture is the end of an optical fiber. Provided this line is ready to be activated, and provided it actually belongs to Deutsche Telekom and not some other operator (indeed it looks a lot like DT), all you need to do is order a connection. The plans for your type of connection are called "Magenta Zuhause Fiber".

When you order a Fiber plan, DT will send a technician who will come to your appartment and install a fiber-modem at no extra charge. The fiber modem will have an RJ45 Ethernet socket which allows to plug in a router.

The router you will need to supply, preferably one with VoIP features if you intend to use the fixed line that comes with a Magenta Zuhause Fiber plan. You can rent a router from Deutsche Telekom (e.g. a Speedport Smart 2) or buy a third party router like a Fritz!Box 7590 or similar. Any router supporting PPPoE connection management via Ethernet and VLAN7 is suitable. The router does not need to have a built-in DSL modem.

Also: Can you provide a picture of that "RJ15" socket? I am not sure what that would be....

Hi all, thanks for the replies.

I was silly, it is indeed RJ45. It makes more sense!

Indeed, I had the intuition the installation was left unfinished and it is true that it is Telekom's mission to provide the modem (I however understand why the customer has to buy the router). As a matter of fact, the internet service is normally included in my rent and so I don't think I need to open a new contract under my name, I'll call my tenant.

Thank you and have a nice evening
