Contract cancellation due to moving abroad
vor 5 Jahren
Hello, I moved to Germany 2 years ago with 2-year of working contract. I got myslef a phone number with a 2-year contract. The time when I got my contract responsible person told me that whenever I get my de-registration paper, I can easily cancel my contract. I do not speak German so I believed that they explained me. Today I went to same store to cancel my contract as I am permanently leaving Germany this Friday and just got my de-registration paper (PS: earliest you can get it 7 days before you leave - that’s the rule). They told me this is not an issue and immediate cancellation can be done via Internet. So, I went to Telekom website with special notice of moving to abroad. It says only possible after 3 MONTHS! This is non-sense. I am requested a proof of leaving the country which I can get only 7 days before I leave and at the same time they say I need to pay 3 more months of my bill. This is unfair. Then you can just tell people de-register no matter what is the excuse. I am leaving and not coming back. I have an official letter. And nobody is helping unbelievable. I am calling the hotline continuously saying English and cannot find anybody to speak. I requested a colleage to call and even the person on the phone could not believe for moving abroad the system asks for 3-month notice. You cannot have the proof before 3 months!!!!! How this can happen???

3 months notice is the rule according to Telekommunikationsgesetz TKG (telecommunications bill). This is the same for all providers and is codified in law.

It might be correct according to the law however, you cannot expect a foreigner to know your laws
Of course we can. As well as all country’s in the world expect that a German knows about the law in other country
I don’t know what a employee of Telekom Gould you, maybe you understood him wrong

Unfortunately no, you cannot expect such a thing. That's why we have people in the branches as representatives to help us, especially foreigners.
If that would only be one person, I could say I misunderstood. The day I got my number and yesterday I am told about immediate cancellation by two different sales people. Additionally, when we call Hotline, the responsible person also told us during moving abroad she would not expect 3-month notice.
I think there is still quite a room for this company to increase its services. Saying just you need to know all the laws and rules even if you don't speak the native language, even if you are a foreigner, does not help. It erases all the positive experiences with the company and with the brand. At least as a company in EU, I would expect contract copies in English for information purposes. Expecting everything from the customer is not fair.

Maybe you have misunderstood everything. To the best of my knowledge, it is actually possible to terminate the contract directly when moving abroad.
Have a look at this cancellation form: https://www.telekom.de/kontakt/e-mail-kontakt/festnetz/umzug-ins-ausland
There it says:

In english:
If you move abroad, you can terminate your contract without adhering to the contract period and notice period if you provide us with appropriate evidence of the move. To do this, we need one of the following documents, for example: Deregistration certificate from the registration office,
certificate by the employer,
Marching orders (for soldiers)
So you should try to fill out this form and wait what happens

@Nico B. Hello Nico, I received an e-mail that Telekom accepted my cancellation of contract as of 31.12.2021. As it is in German I translated it via a tool and I am not sure if I understood everything correctly. Would that be possible for you to help me to understand is there anything I need to do further or should I just pay my bills until the end of December? Or even can we cancel it earlier? I already moved back to my country and not using my Telekom number anymore. Thank you in advance!
