Speedport Smart 4 Plus: DHCPv4 not working causing internet outages
7 months ago
Since morning, DHCPv4 server does not seem to be working anymore on the Speedport device. I can see "(DH001) DHCPv6 is active" messages in the system logs. The last "(H001) DHCP is active" message was seen over 24 hours ago.
I have tried the following:
- Restart the Speedport router multiple times.
- Deactivate and reactivate DHCP via https://speedport.ip/html/content/network/dhcp.html (with and without restarts).
- Tried using https://www.telekom.de/hilfe/hilfe-bei-stoerungen but it says it cannot perform the diagnostics.
The wireless mesh seems to be flakey as well. It seems that the nodes are not receiving IPv4 addresses (as expected when DHCPv4 is not working) and then trying to reconnect.
Other relevant notes.
- Firmware version is 010142.3.9.001.0 .
- WAN is fiber optic.
- There are several static address allocations tied to MAC addresses on the LAN.
- There are no switches or routers upstream to the router.
- There is one PoE switch downstream to the router.
- The only way I can connect over WiFi right now with a v4 address is using a static IPv4 config.
As a last resort I am going to reset the router, hopefully that someone who fixes the issue. If anyone has ideas around what to do here or know of any similar issues reported before, much appreciated.

Hallo @nulltermination ,
I would try the following:
- deactivate WLAN
- power off the Speedport router
- disconnect all LAN cables
- wait for 15 minutes
- power on the router, WLAN off
- connect a single PC/Laptop with LAN cable
If this does not work I would try a factory reset of the router.
Best wishes,
Coole Katze

Tried that. It did not work. But I did a full factory reset and now it is ... happy. I just need to manually reserve the IPs again. Trying via the API did not work :(. Long way around it is then.
Thank you @Coole Katze for your input. I am guessing I won't know what actually caused the issue.

Hi @nulltermination ,
good that it works again; and yes, we will never know what the problem was.
Crossing my fingers that the solution holds
Best wishes,

Hmm. Something is really off. The web console keeps crashing to a point where I have to restart the device manually. Nothing of note in the logs either. Now that I think about it the device did restart on its own yesterday around 1400 yesterday - which was a bit inconvenient. Is that normal?
Is there a way to get the raw system logs? Or something else that could help?

Good evening @nulltermination , as I can see @Coole Katze has already helped.
It seems, there is some trouble with the device. Could you post the logs, without you personal data, so we can try to find any noticeable problems?
Kind regards Sven

Hi @nulltermination,
this didn't work. I get a "file not found" notice.
If I understood it correctly, it worked after the factory reset, but then you changed the settings. What did you do exactly change in the menu?

Hi @Inga Kristina J. The link was set to expire in 24 hours. Here is a new one expiring in 14 days instead. Let me know if that does not work, will try something else.

@Inga Kristina J. Regarding the situation, the events are as follows.
1. Unexpected restart happens without warning during the day.
2. Next morning a lot of client devices stop receiving IPv4 addresses and losing access to internet.
3. Inspection of logs indicated the DHCP v4 server is not running. And never comes back online after multiple restarts.
4. Factory reset is performed, auto recovery ensures SSIDs are re-configured automatically. Logs posted is prior to this point.
5. Web console crashes several times and becomes non-responsive, causing manual restarts.
After this point, the manual changes in configuration I had to re-apply were the following.
1. Administrative password.
2. Enabling https access.
3. Repairing mesh nodes (3x) via WPS .
4. Required port activation configurations (1x).
5. Required static IP allocation (5x).
6. Mapping hostname <> mac addresses (48 devices).
To add to the above, I am also now observing one of the mesh nodes keeps getting disconnected. It auto reconnected twice over the last couple of days but today it simply refused to reconnect and started blinking red. I had to power cycle it with the the LAN cables removed and wait for it to reconnect again. The node is still flakey but connected. The logs lack any useful information at all.

Thanks for checking @Martin Bo. However, I do not think there much more to be done here the pending action was to update the Modem ID attached to the terminal - this was done. Updated my previous thread with some information on my experience.
For anyone following along; saving the router settings prior to replacing the old one and then manually loading the saved settings recovered all static IP and MAC <> devicename mappings unlike the last factory reset. Which is a good sign I suppose.
Now we have to simply wait and see if the DHCP server crashes and burns again. I will ping here if this happens again.
